Basseterre, St. Kitts, 21st March, 2018 (MyVueNews.com) – A Kittitian student studying in Taiwan has written a book about his experiences in the Asian culture.
Being Black in Asia, written by 28-year-old Miguel Flemming, illustrates how important it is to understand the way other cultures live, and equally, the importance of teaching people about who you are and where you are from.
Flemming explained, “Not understanding certain cultures, their gestures, actions and words can result in many conflicts and misunderstandings… Communicating with and understanding each other are most important.”
According to the author, being black in Asia comes with many challenges due to many obvious differences. Some out of curiosity and others out of sheer ignorance, however, it all comes down to how one deals with it.
He stated, “I felt like the only way to respond without facing severe consequences was to write a book to talk about my experience of being black in Asia.”
He wants persons to come to Taiwan, to Asia, with knowledge of what to expect, so one is not caught off-guard.
Among the matters written about are, Where did you come from?, Stares, Laughter and Losing Face, Learning in Taiwan as Foreigner, Teaching English to Asians, Dating in Asia, Embracing Everyone.
The Kittitian writer thanks everyone for their support, and encourages everyone to purchase the paperback or eBook from Amazon or Lulu.
