UWI Five Islands Campus To Host European Union-Latin America & Caribbean Seminar On Emigrant Policies

On Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th, the new Five Islands Campus of the University of the
West Indies (UWI), Antigua will host a two-day seminar co-organised by UWI, the European
Union-Latin America and the Caribbean (EU-LAC) Foundation, and the German Institute of
Global and Area Studies (GIGA Institute) on “Emigrant policies in the Caribbean and Central
America: Migration at the crossroads between Europe and Latin America”.

The seminar will focus on the challenges of assuming responsibility towards emigrants, the
development of emigrant policies regarding the recognition and protection of emigrants’ rights, and ways in which emigrants can contribute to their home countries and countries of settlement.

With the guidance by experts from the EU, Latin America, and the Caribbean, participants will
also examine a variety of emigrant policy models and showcase experiences from countries,
sub-regions, and regions as a whole. Furthermore, panels and participants will also comparatively explore emigrant policies which may serve as useful parameters for sending
states to improve their policies and offer avenues for collaboration with receiving states.

The seminar aims to facilitate opportunities for broadening learning through cooperation on socio-economic matters affecting the EU, Latin America, and the Caribbean. On the last day, the seminar will collate conclusions and recommendations for action among civil society and
public sector stakeholders.

Policymakers, government officials, as well as academics from different disciplinary backgrounds from the EU, Latin America, and the Caribbean are expected to be in attendance.

Also, during the course of the conference, the Executive Director of the EU-LAC Foundation,
Paola Amadei will hold bilateral discussions with Prime Minister, the Honourable Gaston
Browne; the Honourable E.P. Chet Greene, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration, and
Trade; and other local officials concerning the conference and the EU-LAC Foundation.
