2015-16 National Carnival queen contestants presented for the first time

The young ladies were presented to the media on Saturday, 17th October, during a media event at the Ocean Terrace Inn, attended by Deputy Prime Minister Shawn Richards, the minister responsible for culture.

The National Carnival Queen Pageant Committee Chairperson Violet Williams introduced the contestants as Jaheida Lewis, Rohanda Devent, Khyla Brown, Evania Thibou, Orngel Erskine and M. Jahnel Nisbett. The contestants interacted with the media talking about their motivation for entering, their personalities and the experiences among each other so far. All are looking forward to representing the country the best way they can recognizing they have become role models for other young people.

Carnival-MinisterMinister Richards thanked the six contestants for coming forward to participate in the pageant and informed, “As of today, they become ambassadors for St. Kitts and Nevis. This is something I hope they would take quite seriously, because as of today, the public certainly will be looking at them and will be evaluating them even ahead of the show.”

Richards also took the opportunity in advance to thank sponsors for their involvement in the National Carnival Queen Pageant. He said, “Without the sponsors, it would be a heavy financial burden on the Carnival Committee and also on the federal government to provide sponsorship for the contestants.”

He also extended an invitation for full public participation in this year’s carnival. “Carnival is for the citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis. It is our National Carnival, and I want to encourage all persons, whether you are going to participate by being a part of an activity or by supporting the different activities, to give full cooperation and participation to ensure that carnival is a success,” Richards encouraged.

National Carnival Committee Chairman Noah Mills provided a brief glimpse into what can be expected for this year’s carnival. He said, “We’re very diversified this year. We are looking at bringing back what use to be called Carnival Village that disappeared for some time. We are bringing back female calypso. We intend to bring back extempore calypso. We’ll be introducing a food fair this year, and in its inaugural year, there is going to be a National Swimwear (competition).

He indicated there are other events that are being brought back or being introduced for the first time this year.
