$25 Million Road Upgrades

This was disclosed in Basseterre on Thursday (16th May, 2013), during a special ceremony that was hosted at the Kim Collins Highway, involving senior government officials and those involved in the construction of the road.

The project is dubbed “St. Kitts Infrastructure Upgrade” and officials indicated that activities started as early as December 2012 at the Cockleshell Bay with the resurfacing of roads and continued at the Marriot Round About in the Frigate bay area.

The infrastructural work will run from the Pelican Mall to Cockleshell Bay, where roads will be reconstructed and resurfaced.

Project Consultant, Martell Lee, explained that other work will include:

  • The construction of a Tunnel for vehicular and pedestrian travel on Timothy Hill at on the Sir Kennedy Simmonds Highway.
  • The reconstruction and resurfacing of the Pond and Sandown Roads including expansion of drains.
  • The reconfiguration of the Kim Collins Highway and the erection of a roundabout.

The Minister responsible for public words and Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Asim Martin told those in attendance at the official function Thursday that the Infrastructural upgrade project could yield many benefits to various stakeholders.

In addition the project, he promised, is expected to alleviate flooding in the Sandown Road and Pond Road Areas, and should provide an increase in safety with respect to walking and driving through Timothy Hill and the increase in economic activity in the Frigate Bay and South East Peninsula areas.
