$600 Each for Passport Says PM

Douglas Stated, “When this matter was brought to the Cabinet a few months ago there was a long debate and discussion about the cost. One had to take a decision, whether we are going to allow our citizens arriving at borders with an immigration officer looking at the passport up and down and saying this looks like a fraud. We had to take that decision not to put our citizens through that kind of exercise or to go ahead and have these new passports published at a higher cost.”

He continued, “I want to emphasize today that Cabinet took the right decision and ensured that these new passports would be ordered in order to give greater protection and security to our citizens who are arriving at borders and having the immigration officers turn up their nose and turning down their passports. That is what we have achieved for the citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis”

He concluded by saying, “Mr. speaker I want to make the point (that) we took the right decision and even though it cost $600 to produce one, Cabinet took the decision we cannot allow the entire cost to be passed on to the passport holder and as a result of that some new prices which are above the existing prices had to be issued.”

The new travel documents were introduced in January but costing significantly higher, with new prices as high as $250, compared to the $85.00 once charged. To replace a stolen or lost passport now costs EC$500.00
