The baton of succession was passed on Sunday 30th September, 2012.
If the new political leader of PAM is to have his way, he has promised to restructure and build a new organization that will be a party for all Kittitians and Nevisians.
This was the commitment given to party loyalists on Sunday 30th September, 2012, at a special convention held to formally ratify his election as the new leader to succeed Mr. Lindsay Grant, who resigned in July this year.
He told delegates present and citizens listening via a live radio broadcast, “We will develop new policies that speak to you and your needs. This is the new PAM that we will build together. The new PAM that will be ready, willing and able to win the next general election and restore honour and dignity to the office of the Prime Ministership!”
To accomplish this task of nation building, the Constituency Number 5 Representative, (Sandy Point), outlined a three point plan that he vowed would usher in a new day for St. Kitts & Nevis.
Firstly, stated Richards, a new PAM Administration will introduce a series of good government laws to ensure that the corruption and thievery that has been the hallmark of the Denzil Douglas Administration comes to an end. This he said will include making the contract tendering process public, to put an end to politicians lining their pockets and that of their friends.
“We will end the Crime and Murder Crisis in this country. We have the worst crime rate in the entire Caribbean! It doesn’t have to be that way. We must implement Operation Ceasefire, which is a crime fighting strategy that helped cut violence in several American cities in half. It directly addressed the gun problem and the gang problem. We must do a comprehensive overhaul of our police force, because…IT’S NOT WORKING. We must make sure our police are not corrupt and (that they are) properly trained. We will do this. And together, we will take back our streets, “committed the new PAM Leader.
The third pillar of Richard’s three point plan relates to, as he puts it, “Jobs, Jobs, and Jobs.” He said PAM will create a jobs corps programme that would include training, job placement and job creation through investments in infrastructure. “We will look to develop an international business sector by strengthening our financial regulatory environment. This will bring investment and capital to our country and with that investment, there will be more construction, hospitality and service jobs…”
Recognizing though that the task ahead is not easy, Richards cautioned that there will be challenges in the future, but he knows that together, the country can face them and build the new PAM and the new St. Kitts & Nevis that we are all so hungry for.
“Come with me, and together, we can introduce a sunshine government…tackle the crime and murder and create jobs for our people…
A New Day is dawning, promised the PAM Leader!
