The meeting was held at the western campus of the Basseterre High School on Friday (17th June) afternoon.
Speaking with MiyVue.com, the Sergeant said he was happy to meet with the media, and described it as important.
“I must say that I was happy to meet with some of the media personnel here in St. Kitts today here at the Basseterre High School (BHS). I think this meeting was quite important for me to have the opportunity to basically put a face to a number of names of media representatives that I’ve been in touch with since Tuesday this week… it is must easier to communicate…once you have an understanding of who that person is…”
Sergeant Hector fills the position, as the force’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) Inspector Vaughan Henderson is overseas on training. The Sergeant, in explaining how the idea of having a meeting with the press came about, said it is imperative that the relationship between the police and the press be strengthened which would lead to an improved relationship between the police and the public.
“…The whole idea behind meeting with the media is to ensure that…day-to-day operations can be smoother than it was in the past and secondly, smooth for me being here as the Public Relations Officer because I would have lacked some of the necessary local knowledge that is would take to run a department like this effectively.
“…I think the real importance of this relationship is that because is my capacity … I think part of my primary duty is to basically sell the organisation in a positive way which I think will build the overall image of the organisation and I do think (and I am very passionate of the view) that is in fact the image of the organisation is maintained and strengthened within the community, throughout the entire federation, then alot of our issues of crime and security can be easily settled, or easily dealt with on a day to day business once there is a good relationship with the public.”
