The Open Day – which stretches over a two-day period – is being held under the theme, “Achieving Agricultural Impact through Effective Consultation and Action”, commenced with an opening ceremony which was attended by the Deputy Governor General, Edmund Lawrence, Minister of Agriculture Dr. Timothy Harris, dignitaries of members of the Consular Corps and school children from across the island.
In presenting brief opening remarks, Chairperson for the opening ceremony, Ashton Stanley reminded that gathering that the Department has seen the need and has taken the initiative to marry action with consultation between the department, the public and agriculture stakeholders.
Dr. Harris, in presenting the featured address, explained the need for food security and outlined the strides being made by the department to that end. He indicated that although the federation is still far from achieving that goal, the Department is resolute to work towards that objective.
The importance of healthy eating, food security and “buying local” was reinforced by entertainers who made presentations at the opening ceremony. King Lala, “SP Finest” and the Mighty Persuader encouraged persons to make decisions which would promote the agricultural sector.
Following the opening ceremony, the dignitaries and other officials were taken on a tour of the grounds and briefed on the different stalls, displays and products available for public perusal and purchase.
The Open Day opens at 9:00 a.m. daily and in order for persons to gain entrance, a small fee will be collected at the gate: adults pay $2 and children pay $1. Children in their uniforms, however, enter free of cost.
