Deputy Prime Minister Sam Condor, Minister of Health Marcela Liburd, Resident Ambassador from the Republic of China (Taiwan) and other top officials were all present at the opening ceremony, held today, 7th March.
The ceremony started with a rendition of the National Anthem of St. Kitts and Nevis by Rolhensha Henry followed by a prayer by Rev. Wycherley Gumbs.
Mr. Thomas Jackson, Director of Agriculture then gave an overview on the performance of agriculture throughout the past year and he outlined several initiatives that the Agriculture Department undertook.
Minister of Agriculture Dr. Timothy Harris then gave a passionate address, in which he stated that he has been inspired by his time working with farmers. He added that he knows what it feels like, when faced with many of the struggles, as he worked on farms before. Harris also made another call to the hotels to support local farmers by buying local produce.
Dr. Cedric Lazarus representative from the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) along with Dr. Harris signed an FAO Country Programme Framework agreement. This will be implemented here in St. Kitts, for the next 3 years, and will constitute FAO’s input into the national development framework and planning cycles, as well as into the UNDAF.
The official meetings are expected to chart the way forward for agriculture, discuss youth in agriculture and give an overview of the Needsmust Agro-Processing Project among other issues.
