According to a BBC Caribbean report, Hughes said he is angry with the United Kingdom government, and had some harsh words for Britain as the dependent territory is trying to balance its budget in keeping with directives from London.
Hughes told BBC Caribbean as he sought to make a case for independence for the island, “Britain has nothing for black colonies, nothing but slavery.”
Anguilla has a budget deficit of some US$30 million and the chief minister says that the UK government wants him to send home more than 300 public servants in an effort to whittle down that deficit.
He has reacted by threatening to seek independence for the tiny island, which was once part of what was the state of St Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla.
Anguilla broke away three decades ago while the federation of St Kitts and Nevis gained independence.
