Senator Sylvia O’Marde, who was appointed an independent senator by former governor general Dame Louise Lake Tack, stepped down late last week.
Her resignation comes less than two weeks after opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) Senator, Harold Lovell called it quits, a month and a half of getting the job.
Governor General Dr Rodney Williams confirmed O’Marde’s departure and said she would be replaced early today, in time for the first sitting of the Senate.
He declined to disclose the identity of the “new” senator.
“She resigned last week and in her letter she said she thought that because her appointment was by the former governor general and that because she had already served five years, she should step down and allow me to decide whether to choose her or someone else to do the job,” Dr Williams told OBSERVER last evening.
O’Marde confirmed Dr Williams’ summary of her reasons for tendering her resignation, but said she would comment further today.
