Astro makes history in Culturama calypso finals

King Astro defeated Dis and Dat who was attempting to create history as well by going for an eleventh win of the Culturama calypso title. It wasn’t to be. Eight calypsonians competed in the 2015 edition of the Culturama calypso show.

Astro-CrownedBefore an animated audience, the calypsonians belted out their tunes supported by creative performances. It was a competitive night and in the end Astro was crowned.

But the Culturama activities continue Sunday when six charming young ladies will compete in the S. L. Horsford Miss Culture Queen Pageant. That show will be held at the Cultural Complex, with an 8 p.m. starting time.

On Monday, August 3, the Emancipation J’Ouvert jump-up is scheduled to start at 5 a.m.  Four bands are registered to be on the street – Oddysy, Ultimate, Cassanova and the Core bands. This year, two bands, Cassanova and Core bands, will do the traditional four-mile jam from Gingerland to Charlestown.

At 12 noon, the action moves to Herbert’s Beach for the Culturama beach party, and at 8 p.m., the Cultural Complex comes alive once more, this time for the LIME Ms. Caribbean Culture Queen Pageant.

The curtains come down on the 2015 Culturama festivities on Tuesday 4 with the Cultural Street Parade and Last Lap around Charlestown.
