Sergeant O’Neil Patterson was charged on Friday following a ruling by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Patterson, who is in charge of the Community Safety and Security Unit based in the Corporate Area, is accused of sexually assaulting a medical doctor on the compound of the Elleston Road Police Station.
The cop, who has denied the allegations, was granted bail when he appeared before the Corporate Area Criminal Court on Friday.
The alleged incident took place on Labour Day, March 23, after the policeman and the doctor participated in a Labour Day project at the Bellevue Hospital in Kingston.
Patterson’s attorney has maintained that the policeman had engaged in consensual sex with the doctor.
Patterson is scheduled to return to court on July 9, when a preliminary enquiry will be held in the matter.
He is the recipient of the Lasco Top Cop award, which is given to members of the police force for outstanding service to the police force and the community.
