The suggestion was made following the announcement of the winners of the Sugar Mas’ 2010/2011 street activities.
Four-time Calypso Monarch King, Konris ‘King Konris’ Maynard won the 2010/2011 Road March with his song, “Unstoppable Force”, edging out the Grand Masters Band, the Small Axe Band and the Nu Vybes Band International. Following that announcement, a debate was sparked and surrounded whether or not an individual was eligible to win the Road March title.
In a recent interview with MiyVue.com, during which King Konris made comments on his win, he explained that there exists a serious “band culture” in the federation of St. Christopher and Nevis and if this is the case, a band clash would be ideal. He further explained that he forwarded his suggestion to the Carnival Committee
“I suggested that we have a band clash, every year. I suggest that we set up a band clash, have big prize money, have a place a time and a date. I suggest J’ouvert morning after the jamming to conclude in the Circus. That way all the bands can line up from the different points in the Circus and you give them time to perform and see who could move the crowd first, who has the best sound etc, since we love this band rivalry so much.”
Chairman of Sugar Mas’ 2010/2011 confirmed that the suggestion was received and noted that it will be considered.
“It is definitely not a bad idea. We are listening, we are going to learn. We will definitely take a look at it. Yes, it was suggested in a couple of conversations that I had with him so it is something that we are going to look at. We are not going to rule out any options at all and, as he rightly said, we have a culture of people who are real fanatics when it comes to the bands and if we can use that to help them make some money and to add and another outlet for folks to have a good time, then I am all for it,” O’Garro expressed.
