Basseterre getting ready for traffic gridlock

The changes to come are designed to assist a smoother flow of traffic and the easier movement of pedestrians, while also making it hassle free for the operations of emergency vehicles.

The underlining objective however, according to officials, is safety; for everyone.

To this effect, the Traffic Department has put in place the following arrangements for the Miss St. Kitts Queen Pageant, Senior Calypso finals and Miss Caribbean Talented Teen Show, on December 28th, 29th and 30th respectively,   at Sugar Mill and Children Carnival on December 31st.

  • No parking will be permitted on the eastern side of Victoria Road between the Basseterre High School and the Old Boy School.
  • Traffic will flow northwards only along Victoria Road, ie towards the Moravian church direction.
  • Traffic will flow eastwards only along Lozack Road.
  • General parking will be at the Basseterre High School Playfield.
  • Sponsors and other officials with the relevant parking passes will park in a specially designated place at the BHS.
  • Only persons with the relevant parking pass will be permitted to park in Warner Park.
  • Restrictions will be effective from 6:00 pm nightly.
  • Security will be provided for vehicles parked at the BHS grounds until half hour after the shows.

They say traffic signs will be posted and officers will be on duty to enforce these restrictions.

The authorities have also initiated a revised route for the Children’s Parade Dec 31st:

Route for Children’s Carnival:-
Start at Dr. William Connor School

 Right on to Cayon Street

Right on to Church Street

 Left on Liverpool Row
 Left on to Fort Street
 Right on to Cayon Street
Right on to West Independence Street
 Right onto the Bay Road

Right on to Fort St up Victoria Road to the Sugar Mill

Similar changes will be in place for the Grand Carnival Parade on Thursday 1st January, 2015 and some streets will also see restrictions, mainly downtown Basseterre, for the Last Lap session on Friday, 2nd January.
