Bill to Liquidate SSMC to be introduced Thursday

According to a Government release, Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Timothy Harris will lead off the debate on The St. Kitts Sugar Manufacturing Corporation Dissolution Bill, 2012 which is to be introduced and given its first reading at Thursday’s sitting.

Despite the industry being closed in 2005, the Board of the Corporation has persisted since that time, involved in treating the debt of the corporation, considering matters pertinent to the severance of workers and managing of existing assets.

The SSMC  retained over 60 employees since its closure in 2005 some of these workers will now be permanently severed while others may be re-employed in the government services to help in the fulfilment of critical functions, an earlier government release stated.

Another new Bill to be considered on Thursday is one by the Prime Minister and Minister for the Police and the Subject of National Security. Dr. Denzil Douglas will lead off debate on The Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Bill, 2012.

Prime Minister Douglas will also introduce and have read a first time The Procurement and Contract Administration Bill, 2012.

Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, the Patrice Nisbett will introduce and have read a first time, The Law Commission Bill, 2012 and the OECS Magistracy Agreement Bill, 2012.
