Bird III calls for opposition members to declare their wealth

“Both parties do this thing all the time,” Chairman of the Antigua Barbuda True Labour Party (ABTLP), Vere Bird III said on OBSERVER AM on Tuesday. “The pot is calling the kettle black and when the ABLP (Antigua Barbuda Labour Party) loses office, they will be outside also talking about the wealth of whoever goes in there.”

Looking, in hindsight, to 2004, he added: “We had questions about how several of the members of parliament in the UPP government, how they acquired such wealth so fast. It was never addressed. They just turned a blind eye because they were in power.”

The topic of transparency in public office has been a hotly-debated topic in the public sphere since last Thursday, after Political Leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP) Harold Lovell claimed that Prime Minister Gaston Browne purchased a yacht valued at over US $250,000, land in Jolly Harbour worth over $600,000 and a Lincoln Navigator allegedly valued at $450,000.

In response, PM Browne told OBSERVER media over the weekend that a company, in which he is a shareholder, is the owner of a charter boat and added that the boat is intended for yacht charter services.
