Brantley: Nevis crime trending down, cooperation of public needed

In an interview with MiyVue.com, Brantley, who is also minister of tourism in the NIA, indicated that crime is a social problem that needs to be fixed, and this, he noted, can only be done through the assistance of the public and the police.

“We don’t fight crime for tourist. We fight crime for people. So, the problem of crime is something that we continue to grapple with,” Brantley said, as he indicated an overall downward trend in crime on the island.

“Thankfully in Nevis, the crime is trending downward, and we are hopeful that with the help of the police and the cooperation of the public, we can continue to see that downward trend,” Brantley noted.

Recently, Nevis’ Premier Vance Amory stated that the NIA and the Federal Government are considering external help in alleviating crime on both islands.

Amory, who is also the minister with responsibility for Nevis Affairs in the Federal Government, noted that crime, in any form, would greatly diminish the image of the Federation to both the visitor and the investor.

“I think our purpose, certainly, is to do all in our power to deal with crime and to stamp it out, eradicate it, and continue to have zero tolerance to crime in Nevis and also in St. Kitts,” Amory said.

Meanwhile, as the NIA deals with the issues of crime, other efforts are directed to improving the tourism product of the island. Brantley told MiyVue.com that the NIA has embarked on a number of initiatives to bolster tourism on the island, including the enhancement of several tourism sites on the island.

In addition, the minister reported that several hotel projects would result in increase accommodation on the island.
