Bravo a winner, Gayle a loser in IPL

West Indies opening batsman Gayle recovered from a shaky start to smash an enterprising 77 as RCB lost by seven wickets to Kings XI Punjab.

Gayle survived an lbw shout when he was four off 11, and went onto help RCB score 122 in the last 10 overs after a slow start to their innings.

His knock lasted 53 balls which included four fours and six sixes while captain Virat Kohli contributed 57 as they pushed RBC to 174 for five.

Adam Gilchrist, the Kings XI Punjab captain, finally found form with a 54-ball 85 as he led a seven-wicket rout of RBC at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

Gilchrist’s decision to stick Bangalore in paid off as his bowlers came up with some tidy spells before the almost inevitable Gayle assault.

With ‘175’ replacing ‘333’ on the back of his shirt, he and Kohli were largely responsible for taking Bangalore to 174 for 5.

Kohli and Gayle went at a run a ball with occasional boundaries.

The first six of the innings came only in the 11th over, and the floodgates finally opened only in the 14th, when three consecutive Gayle sixes off Manpreet Gony set the stage for the late surge.

The two added 137 before Parvinder Awana, who had been denied Gayle’s wicket earlier, finally found a perfect yorker to send him back for 77.

Bangalore stay on 16 points, the same as Sunrisers Hyderabad, and will likely have to beat Chennai Super Kings—two-time champions—on May 18 to progress to the playoffs.

Punjab’s win ensured that Chennai, Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals were assured of a spot in the final four, since no team other than Hyderabad can now reach 20 points.

Meantime, Bravo’s Chennai Super Kings beat Delhi daredevils by 33 runs in Chennai.

Captain Mohindra Singh Dhoni was unbeaten on 58 as Super Kings posted a competitive 168 for four with daredevils slumping to 135 for nine .

Bravo was not out on 12 and picked up two wickets for 19 runs from his four overs.
