A police press release dated 12th December 2010 informs that members of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force “received a report that there had been a shooting at Bay View Housing at approximately 2:30 a.m.”
The release further informs that members from the Basseterre Police Beat and Patrol, the Anti-Narcotics Unit, the Special Services Unit, the Anti-Gant Unit and the Criminal Investigations Department made an immediate response to the scene of the crime.
“Based on information, detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department visited the JNF Hospital and spoke to Brian Brookes an adult of Bay View Housing who informed them that while he was driving into his driveway at approximately 2:30 am, an unknown male person, who was at the time wearing a dark coloured hooded shirt which covered his head fired a number of gunshots at him. Damage was done to Mr. Brooke’s vehicle and he received gunshot injuries to his left and right upper arm and abrasions on his chest.”
Unconfirmed reports suggest that the assailant was making an attempt to break into Brookes’ home and his effort was thwarted by Brookes’ arrival home.
Brookes, according to the police communiqué, is warded in “stable condition”.
Preliminary investigations were made at the scene of the incident, the scene was processed and “the damaged vehicle, as well as a number of items of evidential value into police custody for further analysis.”
