Bus Fares May Increase Next Month

In just one week’s time bus fares in St. Kitts could be increased if the proposals of the local bus association are approved by the federal govern which is said to be presently studying the recommendations.

In their proposals the association has called for increased fares from 1st June, 2012.

Members of the St. Kitts Bus Association were speaking on public radio on Tuesday stating that if their requests are not met, appropriate actions will be taken by the bus men.

The bus drivers also revealed that in their proposal to the government they have requested that  a night fare be implemented that all passengers transported between 10:00pm-4:00am are required to pay extra on their fare as driving during these hours poses a risk to the operators.

They are also demanding that a flat rate of $5 be paid by all passengers who wish to journey off the prescribed bus route, which was a rate the bus men have negotiated among themselves. A four tier price system is also being suggested and would mean that children will pay the same flat fare as the adults.

The bus drivers have also called on passengers to acknowledge the Pay as You Enter signs on the buses, which they claimed is supposed to be supported by legislation.

They added that they wanted to establish bus stops throughout the island to make it easier and safer for drivers who use the road.
