The launch of the 2010 calypso tents is not going to be the same as years gone by. This year, it’s not going to be an individual launch for each camp, instead it is going to be a Clash of the Tents, according to the organizers.
Leader of the Grand Masters Band, Mr. Wingrove Williams, told miyvue.com, that on Sunday 7th November, the two calypso tents, Proud Sounds and Legends, will both launch at Beaumont Park.
Mr. Williams promised that this year’s launch will be one to remember.
“It’s not the usual individual launch, this time we have over thirty calypsonians that will be on stage and we are going to make it into a Clash of the Tents,” he stated.
“However, not all the calypsonians from both tents will perform at the launch,” Williams added.
According to the Tent organizer, the Proud Sound Tent has been rehearsing for over two weeks and they are what he described as, “Tent ready.”
Proud Sounds Calypso Tent currently has over 30 registered calypsonians and among them are a number of newcomers.
Some of the calypsonians named by the Tent leader are: Unexpected, Neglector, Roc-a-Fella, Aba-lively, De chemist, Big Lice, Braw Bread, I- Soursop, Honesty, Calypso Reggie, Signing Jackie and Hollywood.
On the other hand, the Legends Calypso Tent, which is headed by reigning Calypso Monarch King Socrates, also has over 30 calypsonians.
Socrates said Legends began rehearsals since 19th Oct and they currently have three new females and two males on board.
Two of the new comers are Lord Flex and Reggae sensation Masud Sadiki, who seems to be returning to his calypso roots of the 1990s.
As we all know, this is the time when many calypsonians compete for the crown; some with their funny, witty personalities, while others simply tell it like it is, so this year it’s all left to be seen what topics and songs will emerge from the artistes.
Former Calypso Monarch, King Konris is also scheduled to make an appearance in the Tents, though there still is no indication if he will compete for crown this year.
