When the band strikes up on Wednesday, 28th December, there will be three contenders who have already achieved the status of Calypso Monarch,(Socrates, Konris and defending Monarch Pungwa). These are the ones who know what it is like to taste the sweet juice of victory at the senior level.
However, both Anastasia and Mighty Takeover, also have had success, with Anastasia winning her fifth Female crown this year and Takeover being a former 4-peat Junior King and now, a few nights ago, winning the Power Soca Monarch Competition.
It is therefore a line-up of very experienced calypsonians but only one will win. The other Finalists are Isoursop- (a former Culturama King), Big Lice (a former Junior King) and Godfrey.
This will be the first time in two years that former Monarch, King Konris, will be competing after winning four consecutive crowns from 2005-2008.
Although King Pungwa is the reigning King and says that fans can expect him to repeat his 2010 success, much attention will be on Konris to see if he can continue his winning ways. Some fans are doubtful however, given that he failed miserably to even place in the top three of the Groovy and Power Soca Monarch Competitions; though he was the defending Power King.
But after a two year sabbatical, Konris will now be hoping for his past glorious days to return, in time for this year’s competition.
Konris’ compositions for this year’s calypso monarch are 20/20 and Oil and water.
