According to some vendors in downtown Basseterre, the victim was known to have operated in the city center.
She was however a resident of Cayon and met her demise not too far from her family home.
Residents of Cayon indicated that the vendor tried to escape but was unsuccessful. She was believed to have been in the presence of other family members, including her daughter, and friends.
This morning’s shooting is therefore accountable for the 16th recorded homicide in St. Kitts and Nevis, for the year 2012.
Police have indicated that they will shortly release the name of the victim.
A police statement said, the incident appears to have been a domestic one. This they said is what may have led to the death of the resident of Whyte’s Mountain in Cayon. The victim’s spouse was taken into custody and is assisting the police with the investigation.
The victim’s name will be released to the public pending notice of the next of kin, said the statement. “The public will be updated once the autopsy reveals the cause of death. At this time the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force wishes to extend our condolences to the family of the victim and to remind everyone that there is no excuse for domestic violence. The SVU of the Royal St.Christopher and Nevis Police Force stands by to investigate any claim of crimes against children and domestic violence. Again, our condolences to the family of the victim,” said the police.
