On Saturday 2nd October, scores of volunteers drawn from communities throughout the island, including former World Athletic Champion, Kim Collins, participated in the First St, Kitts Run and Family Walk.
The event was kicked off from the Royal St. Kitts Golf Club, starting with the 2K Family Walk and a 5K Run, followed by a lively and entertaining Fun Fair and Barbeque, involving families and friends.
Approximately EC$100,000 are said to have been raised to help improve the quality of life for the children in need.
At a simple but important ceremony, the symbolic check was handed over to officials of the St. Christopher Children’s Home, the official name of the orphanage.
Leading sponsors for the event included the Marriott Vacation Club, St. Kitts Marriott & Royal Beach Casino, Chistophe Harbour, Beaumont Park, amongst others.
Participants were briefly addressed by St. Kitts & Nevis Prime Minister, Dr. Denzil Douglas, who praised the efforts of those involved and responsible for the humanitarian gesture that would deliver much needed benefits to the Home.
The St. Christopher Children’s Home, located in the West Basseterre area was opened in 1935 to care for children who may lost their parents or abandoned by their mothers and fathers and or extended families.
The facility has also accommodated young children seeking protection from abusive home environments.
