Over the next three weeks, four security officers will receive training twice per week. Linda Pearson is the Marina Manager, and she explains the relevance of their training, “The objective is to teach some of the marina security team, who are currently unable to swim, an important skill to use while working in a marine environment, which has visiting marina guests.”
The swimming is an entry-level program and when finished the students will be able to thread water, swim freestyle, do the breaststroke and possibly the backstroke.”
This swimming program is exclusive to the Christophe Harbour Marina Security Team members, and is being conducted by Elizabeth Shingler, a FINA (Fédération Internationale de Natation) swimming instructor.
Three Christophe Harbour marina staff have also been trained in the FINA swimming instructor program previously, and they will assist in training the security team during this program.
The Christophe Harbour swimming program for the security team is being held in collaboration with the St Kitts Yacht Club and Elizabeth Shingler as coordinator.
Shingler previously ran a program for the St. Christopher Children’s Home, resulting in six children of various ages learning to swim. The Christophe Harbour Marina team assisted in teaching the children’s program. One ran in July2016.
Pearson said, “With having a good relationship with the St Kitts swimming program coordinator Elizabeth Shingler, we hope that in the future we will also be able to teach the staff and children of Christophe Harbour.”
