Basseterre, 2nd December, 2020, (MyVue News.com)- Thousands of shoppers in St. Kitts and Nevis are already looking forward to the upcoming two days of discounts on the payment of the 17% Value Added Tax, (VAT).
Traditionally, this financial break, offered at Christmas time, has resulted in millions of dollars being spent over a 48 hour period, as residents stock up for the holidays and purchase much needed items for their homes and businesses.
This year, Government, again is allowing the VAT Discount Days, where only 5% would be payable, in most instances.
Given the difficulties being faced in light of the Coronavirus, Prime Minister Harris has previously expressed the hope that the VAT Days will help to stimulate economic activity, assist small businesses and spread economic activity across the corporate sector.
The dates agreed to, and already announced, are Friday 18th & Saturday 19th December, 2020.
To facilitate residents and government workers, in particular, civil servants will be paid their salaries on Thursday, 17th December, one day ahead of the VAT Discount period.
Government will also be making a special payment, (honorarium), to non-establishment workers, who will also be paid on the same day as those in the civil service.
However, with the current situation of the COVID-19, government is urging citizens and also the business places, to exercise extra care and effort to be compliant with all relevant protocols for social distancing, mask wearing, scanning for temperatures and hand sanitizing.
They have also suggested that businesses should seek professional crowd control assistance from the local security forces.
Crowd control has always been a challenge on these special VAT Discount days and this year would be no different.
Two days have been allowed to help reduce the expected over crowding, by giving citizens more time and opportunity to complete their shopping.
