Parish Priest, Father Bernard Latus is to have had the bells cleaned and restored and surprised his congregation by ringing them prior to the start of Mass on Sunday, 5th February, 2012.
Churches on St. Kitts and Nevis are preparing for a Mass of Welcome and Thanksgiving for the new Bishop of St. John’s-Basseterre, Rev. Kenneth Richards, on Thursday 9Th February 2012.
According to the Church’s website, Roman Catholicism in St. Kitts revived from its ashes in the 19th Century and flourished thereafter.
In 1846 several hundred Portuguese from Madeira came to St. Kitts and were instructed in reviving the Catholic religion. Together with a few catholic families from the neighbouring islands of St. Maarten and St. Bartholomew, who had already settled in the territory. Also some Irish Catholics fleeing the Irish Potato Famine arrived in Basseterre and settled in what today is known as Irish Town, in the western part of Basseterre.
