Collins stated that there are issues within the education sector that require urgent action for change. These he said include the introduction of a new system that facilitates a fair and transparent path for promotions in the education sector. He also called for a better protocol because there is fear that they will continue to witness the continued exodus of outstanding teachers from the profession.
The Union President spoke of other issues that have been of great concern, when he said, “We must stand for the respect for the leadership of our school, so parents understand that they can no longer threaten teachers, and teacher must be empowered to do their work without fear or favour, in the best interest of our children.”
There are some teachers who are afraid to be firm in tackling problems in the classrooms. Collins suggested that the reason why hell has been kept at bay is because of the SKTU.
“We are the ones who ensure the schools remain safe places where the learning environment is adequate,” Collins added.
For Collins, there could not have been a more appropriate theme chosen for this year’s World Teachers Day, because there is need for teachers to stand and address issues that continue to undermine the very integrity of the education sector.
