Commission into cricket and football millions launched

The Minister made the announcement this afternoon, confirming that he was establishing a commission whose main remit will be to ‘conduct an independent inquiry to review the financial standing of the Bermuda Football Association and the Bermuda Cricket Board’.

However, the inquiry will not be a public one with Mr Blakeney keen to avoid the investigation turning into a ‘witch hunt’.

Other areas to be investigated by the seven-man commission will include anti-social behaviour in the sports and clubs, the performance of the various national teams, and what steps the Government can take in the future to ensure money is used effectively.

William Madeiros will chair the inquiry, and will be helped by former BFA Honorary President Donald Dane, Charlie Marshall, Sean Tucker, Shelia Brown, Clyde Best and Jeffrey Richardson.

Mr Blakeney has given the commission eight weeks to complete their inquiry and expects to report back to the public some time after the November 21 deadline that he has set.
