After EC$10 million was allocated for the new school in this year’s budget, a Stakeholder Committee was set up to determine a location for the planned new Basseterre High School.
Minister of Education Richards, at the town hall meeting, indicated that five possible sites have been identified. He listed sites at Shadwell, the premises of the old Basseterre High School, an area opposite the University of Health Sciences, an area near to TDC Building Depot, in the Needsmust region.
According to the minister, the sites proposed by Sustainable Development were reviewed, and issues were flagged for each site. The issues included, but were not limited to, size, location, relocation of mechanics, possible environmental issues, psychological issues and transportation.
The minister indicated that another committee, including water experts, was put in place to evaluate selected sites, as some of the issues were “technical in nature.” The technical committee has determined actions that must be taken on each site to alleviate identified problems. The findings were forwarded to the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Sustainable Development.
Richards said he is awaiting a report from the permanent secretary that will help in finalizing the selection of the site for the new Basseterre High School.
