Cuba to subsidise construction and repair of private homes

According to Granma newspaper, as of January 15, citizens needing assistance –whether they are protected by social security or not — will be eligible for as much as 80,000 Cuban pesos in aid to build a family home.

The regulations establish that priority will be given to those whose homes have been damaged by hurricanes or other natural disasters, and that recipients of the subsidy will be required to demonstrate economic need.

In addition, all funds will be held in a state run bank account to ensure they are spent properly.

“This is another step to eliminate unnecessary and excessive subsidies by compensating only those people who need them,” the Granma article read.
