Davis (7-25) bowls T&T to victory

The leg-spinner collected a career-best seven wickets for 25 runs from 25.1 overs, as the Guyanese, chasing 153 for victory, were bowled out for 79 about 10 minutes past the regularly scheduled close on the final day of their third round match.

Davis, a recent member of the West Indies Under-19 side, ended the match at Everest with an incredible 11 for 55 from 41.1 overs, taking his aggregate for the competition to 23. Only opener Kandasammy Surujnarine responded to the challenge for Guyana, hitting a top score of 32, but no other batsman reached 20.

The result meant T&T gained 12 points, moving to 24.3, and Guyana earned just 0.3 points, increasing to 15.8.

T&T face arch rivals Barbados in the next round, starting on Sunday at the Demerara Cricket Club, a stone’s throw away from Bourda Oval, where Guyana meet last year’s champions Windward Islands.

A victory seemed unlikely, when overnight and early morning rain delayed the start until after the regularly scheduled tea break, but Davis transformed the match.

Starting the day on six for one, Guyana ran into early problems on 21 for three, when Davis removed Amir Khan caught close to the wicket for six, and Chanderpaul Hemraj caught at slip for three.

Kwame Crosse joined Surujnarine, temporarily stemming the fall of wickets, but Davis removed him before Guyana had reached 50. After this, it was only a matter of time – Guyana reached 64 for four, but they lost their next four wickets before they reached 70.

Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai joined his captain Ronsford Beaton, and they frustrated T&T for just over half-hour with a last wicket partnership. But Davis fittingly brought the fun to an end, when he bowled Beaton to clinch a sensational victory for his side in just over two hours.
