Death of Nevis’ First Premier Simeon Daniel

Dr. Daniel died on Sunday, (27th May, 2012), and is already being remembered for his years of service in government, as the first Premier of Nevis and former Minister of Finance of the 1980 coalition government of the People’s Action Movement, PAM and the Nevis Reformation Party, NRP.

After leaving office in 1992, following the defeat of his NRP Administration, by the Concerned Citizen Movement, CCM, led by one of his former Permanent Secretaries, Vance Amory, who became the island’s second Premier. Since then, Daniel dropped from the political radar, and though he practiced law for a while, he also eventually retired from that profession.

Daniel will be remembered also as the Nevisian leader who fought the bravest fight for the people of his 36 square mile island, to gain separation from sister island St. Kitts. However, despite his strong desire for full political autonomy for Nevis, Daniel thought it was in the island’s best interest, at the time, to work with PAM to establish a new government for St. Kitts and Nevis, agreeing with former Prime Minister, Sir Dr. Kennedy Simmonds, to forge an alliance to sweep the Labour Party Government out of office.

Dr. Simeon Daniel was born on 22nd August, 1934 at Barnes Ghaut Village in St. Thomas’ Parish, Nevis, West Indies to Joseph Daniel and Melvina Daniel, nee Archer. He received his early education at St. Thomas’ Government Elementary School in Nevis. He continued his education at the Inner Temple of the Inns of Court in London. In 1966 he became Barrister at Law and was called to the Bar in England.

He returned to Nevis in 1966 and served as Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs and was admitted to the Local Bar that same year. The following year he was appointed Crown Counsel and later Registrar of the Supreme Court and Additional Magistrate in the State. He entered Private practice in 1969 in St. Kitts – Nevis.

Mr. Simeon Daniel was among the founding members of a political party called the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) in 1970.

He served as Chairman of the Local Council from 1972 to 1980 and was elected to the National Assembly in May 1975 and February 1980. Following the formation of the historic Coalition Government of the People’s Action Movement of St. Kitts and the Nevis Reformation Party, Mr. Simeon Daniel assumed the portfolios of Minister of Finance and Nevis Affairs on February 19th, 1980. He gained Home Rule for Nevis under the Independence Constitution in September 1983.
