Designated Bus Stops Soon to be Implemented

Head of the Traffic Department Inspector Cromwell Henry, on Monday, 4th June, 2012, indicated that he is hopeful that by 1st July this year, the department would start enforcing the rules, which he stated have already been legislated.

He also said that the 20 bus stops signs donated by Digicel earlier this year are currently being erected; adding that the department will require another 20 signs, but he stated that TDC has already made a commitment to provide the additional ones.

Traffic Department officials recently met with representatives of the East, West and St. Peters Bus Associations in order to identify the appropriate areas to be designated as bus stops; that they feel would be suitable for passengers.

The process will be done in phases, starting in Basseterre, but the restrictions will not be enforced in the rural areas in the early stages.

The police official also explained that in cases where bus men have senior citizens or physically challenged persons on board, police officers will exercise discretion in their enforcement, but he added that passengers have a duty, as well, to comply with this new law, by waiting at the bus stops and getting off there, and not in the middle of the traffic.
