Dis N’ Dat wins St. Kitts-Nevis Kaiso Bacchanal

The competition was hosted as part of the annual Culturama celebrations on Nevis and featured some of the top contenders from each island.

The First Runner-up place was secured by Sandy Pointer and former National Carnival Calypso King, Starshield, while former Culturama King, Binghi, copped the Second Runner-up title.

The show was created as a compromise, given the huge negative publicity that erupted when Culturama officials this year decided to ban residents of St. Kitts from participating in the Senior Calypso Competition. The anti-St. Kitts or Kittitian sentiments mushroomed a few years ago when a Kittitian won the Culturama crown and many Nevisians objected to the fact that someone not from the island, was allowed to be crown ‘Nevis Culturama Calypso King’.

Since that time when I-Soursop was crowned King, many calypsonians and Nevisians piled on the pressure to restrict the participation of other Kittitians. Therefore with the appointment of a new Culturama Committee earlier this year, the decision was taken to establish new guidelines that in fact do allow Kittitians to take part in the local competition but only if they have been resident on the island for at least two years.

This policy was deemed necessary, said officials, to help calypsonians on the island to develop and ascend to higher standards comparable to those on the sister island of St. Kitts; though calypso fans would argue that Nevisian calypsonians, like Binghi, Dis N Dat and Meeko, are already on par with their Kittitian brothers.

Among the pool of the other competitors in Monday night’s Kaiso Bacchanal were Socrates, Rudder and Jackie from St. Kitts and Pupa Wheeler and Astro from Nevis.

The songs performed in each round by the calypsonians were as followed:

1 – Singing Jackie: I Long For Dat Day & Turn Scars Into Stars
2 – Starshield: Good Shepherd & Nation’s Pride
3 – Socrates: Health Care & Gang Rape
4 – Binghi: Imagine & Don’t Mess Wid We Culture
5 – Astro: The Crusade & Criminals Be Gone
6 – Dis N Dat: Chance To Shine & Leave The Calypso Up To Me
7 – Pupa Wheeler : A Wanna Know & Naughty & Nasty
8 – Rudder: Prosperity & MV Federation
