DPP counters attempt by Attorney General to remove him from office

Writing on behalf of the DDP, Ms Angelina Sookoo, of the Law Offices of Sylvester Anthony, stated that the Attorney General (AG) breached the Constitution “by unlawfully attempting to terminate the Director of Public Prosecutions appointment”. After much public speculation last week that the DPP had been fired by the AG, the release now confirms “the Attorney General asked Mr. Sinanan to leave Office without any notice on the 31st July 2015”.

According to the statement, the lawyers representing the DPP have expressed concern over the Government’s actions, which they described as “completely unconstitutional”.  According to the DPP’s legal representatives, “This case is not just about Mr. Sinanan’s position but about Government acting within the law. It is extremely troubling that the Attorney General should feel that he can ignore the law and act with impunity. Nobody is above the law and this claim has been brought to ensure that this sacred principle is adhered to.”

Ms Sookoo, who is the instructing counsel for DPP Travers Sinanan, told MiyVue.com that not much more will be said on the matter at this time, but assured, “We will update the public as the matter progresses.”

She did indicate, however, that there are some examples of similar cases in the Caribbean and cited two in the Eastern Caribbean. Ms Sookoo said, “There has been a number of matters similar to this in Grenada, also the case is very similar to that of Angela Inniss, which is a local case in terms of who can remove certain judicial officers. But for now, I really want to give the AG the opportunity to review the documents before we comment further.”

In an attempt to have a response to this development from the Attorney General, MiyVue.com was informed that Mr. Byron is off-island on work related matters.
