It will not be easy however to defeat the reigning monarch, King Konris who will be gunning for his sixth crown, amidst a field of contenders mixed with new comers and a few who have had multiple appearances on the big stage, on the big night. These include I-Soursop, Jackie, Craig, Godfrey and Big Lice.

The newcomers to the finals are Rudder, Forest, Ace and Lady Diva.

This is perhaps a historic contest, where for the first time none of the other Finalists, (except the defending king of course), have ever won the Senior Calypso title.

The field was cleared of former kings since on Sunday 16^th December, when veterans and former monarchs, Socrates and Pungwa “bussed” their way out of the final night competition. Though many had earlier expected them to easily move through, their errors during the semi-finals were very costly, with them forgetting parts of their songs and failing to execute a more flawless presentation. Also ruled out, with some surprise though, was Astro, who has been a strong contender in the past.

Despite the great CDs and wonderful recordings; and no matter the strong fan base, when it comes to calypso, the only thing that matters is the performance on the night of the actual final competition. And here is where the story begins for those who are confident of victory over Konris. As he has demonstrated time and time again, he is hard to beat on final night. His carefully crafted stage presentation, beautiful melody and the sweetness of his music have always pulled him through; even when lyrically he may not have been the strongest.

But Jackie may have her own design on how things will play out tonight because she has already argued in song, that it is time for a calypso queen. Waiting in the wings will be the consistent and controversial hard hitting political commentator/calypsonian, the Big Lice; who like Konris, is a former Junior Calypso King.

Fans are also warning that no one should take their focus away from I-Soursop, who though he tied with Lady Diva for the final position in the finals, has the potential for proving critics wrong. Forest, Ace, Craig and Rudder, along with Godfrey, all have a great opportunity to make a place in the top three but their lyrics alone will not get them through. Though only counted for a few points, it is the stage presentation and supporting cast that sometimes is needed to win over the judges, causing them to be more generous than otherwise would.
