Electoral Office actions flout the electoral laws – Liburd

The grouping’s representative in constituency #1, Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd, told MiyVue.com on Saturday there are still irregularities with the voters’ list provided to agents.

He noted that, even with voting getting under way today, they had lodged an official complaint with the presiding officer in his constituency regarding the voters’ list.

“Of course there are issues with the list, because the list doesn’t conform to the legislation,” said Liburd. “The legislation is the National Assembly Act speaks to providing a total list to agents of candidates and for the presiding officers, and certainly, we didn’t see that list,” Liburd stated.

“There were some cases where the presiding officers were helpful, because we objected to the use of that list, but people had already come in there and already voted,” Liburd added.

In some instances, he disclosed that there were some presiding officers who were not cooperating with the Team Unity agents.

“We had a presiding officer who was not cooperation at all.” Liburd noted. “The list that my agent had, I wasn’t allowed the courtesy of comparing both list to see that we had the same list. There were two lists and she hid the list that she had. I find that as being strange if you are talking about transparency and good governance,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Liburd could not confirm to this agency if the names of the voters who would have registered in 2014, up to 30th November had been placed on the official list of voters.

“Everything that this government is doing and everything that the electoral office is doing contravenes the regulations and contravenes the laws of St. Kitts and Nevis, and we must not accept this,” said Liburd.

“A list was posted a couple of hours ago. It is a long list, and it has over 5,000 voters. And that would take some time, and it cannot be done in an hour,” Liburd explained.

Just recently Team Unity objected to the list released by the Electoral Office, because, according to the coalition, only names of persons registered up to the end of 2013 were present on that list.
