Estridge Primary School Student Praised for Winning Caribbean Spelling Bee Contest

Rheyana’s victory was a tough one, said an official of the organizing committee, because when the points were tallied at the end of the first two rounds of the contest, all eight (8) participants, the Kittitian was tied with another student, Keondre Herbert, representing Antigua, with the highest score.

Following the Rules of the Competition, Chief Judge and Rotarian, Dr. Ismay Taylor, gave the instruction for the spell-off.  At the end of the first round of spell-off the Participants were still tied.  Chief Judge Ismay gave instructions for a further spell-off which resulted in Rheyana emerging as the Champion for the Regional Competition.

When the curtains came down on the event it was Rheyana, who was declared the Haliborange Rotary Club of Liamuiga (RCL) Regional Spelling Bee Competition 2011 for Primary Schools across the Region on Saturday.

This year’s Competition, which was the fourth edition in the series, and the second time that St. Kitts is being represented, saw participants from Antigua, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, St. Kitts, Saint Lucia, St. Maarten and St. Vincent & the Grenadines.

The top three Participants for the Competition, who all received trophies and gift baskets from Haliborange/Seven Seas were as follows:

  1. Rheyana Davis of Estridge Primary representing St Kitts, winner, who also won

Five Thousand EC Dollars (EC$5,000.00)

  1. Keondre Herbert representing Antigua in 2nd place, winning Three Thousand EC

Dollars (EC$3,000)

  1. Dandre Toney representing St. Vincent & the Grenadines in 3rd place, winning Two Thousand EC Dollars (EC$2,000.00).

The Regional Spelling Bee started in 2008 when the Inaugural Event was hosted by

Grenada and also won by Grenada.  St. Vincent & the Grenadines walked away with the title for the 2009 and 2010 Events which were hosted by Antigua and Saint Lucia respectively.

The major sponsor of this Regional Competition is Haliborange/Seven Seas which is represented in the Federation of St. Kitts & Nevis by Ram’s Trading Limited.  Bank of Nova Scotia St. Kitts & Nevis was also a sponsor for this year’s Competition.
