The seminar which runs from 2nd to the 6th November is intended to strengthen cooperation and communication between member associations of the SKNFA, government and non-governmental organizations, as well as the media, in order to develop grassroots football here.
An opening ceremony was held on the Tuesday 2nd November, at the St Kitts Marriott Hotel, where president for the St. Kitts and Nevis football association, SKNFA, Anthony Johnson said he is expecting closer ties between all stakeholders of football in St. Kitts and Nevis, upon conclusion of the seminar.
“As it was revealed earlier, one of the main objectives for this seminar is to form better relations between the football fraternity and other NGO’s. So with the assistance of FIFA’s experienced team, working along with our own members of the SKNFA, following these four days, I know this objective will be met in order for us to continue with our development stages of football here,” Johnson said.
FIFA’s instructor for coaching courses, Alvin Corneel, told the gathering that the seminar is of very importance.
Corneel went on to say that, “This is not World Cup, nor is it a World Cup for under-15 or under-17, but, it is the method of developing the player base in everyone of the small countries. Sometimes the definition of grassroots is not exactly what it is in one country as it is in another. In the Caribbean region it is more for kids who have not had the opportunity to be exposed to the game of football and hence the reason for our visit here in St. Kitts.”
Meanwhile, Minister for Sport, Glenn Phillip said his ministry fully supports the initiative. According to Phillip, “The role of sports includes strengthening community spirits and equipping our young people to exercise leadership, discipline and respect among themselves and others, and from what I’ve learnt about this program, all these ingredients are included in this program. Therefore, the Ministry of Youth Empowerment and Sports, for which I am responsible, fully endorses this four day seminar.”
The participants involved in this four day seminar were drawn from all the member clubs of the St. Kitts and Nevis Football Association, SKNFA.
