A special commemorative magazine to this effect will be officially launched here on Sunday 24th June, at Cloud 9 in Basseterre.
The wide-ranging magazine is dedicated primarily to national.
The magazine features articles that trace the origins of calypso and the finalists in the calypso competitions, from 1971 – 2011. It also has a special article on the many controversies that have been known in the art form over the years. Some of these have involved Contenda, Ellie Matt, Entertainer and Starshield, amongst others.
Lincoln Maynard the individual who was responsible for developing the magazine stated that the production of a document of this magnitude was a challenge because Kittitians and Nevisians are known for not recording their history.
He added that the magazine was done as comprehensive as possible and predominantly focused on National Carnival Calypso.
Also made mention of our “walking calypso dictionary” Lord Black and praised him for the critical role he played in making this magazine a reality as far as information is concerned.
Maynard also said that information was also obtained by reading archived newspapers from as far back as 1971.
Director of culture Creighton pension stated that it is a very comprehensive document although if focuses on the 1971 period of calypso it also traces the history of calypso before 1971 and the origins of calypso in St. Kitts
Pension also commended Maynard for the perseverance he put in to getting this done, as there is no one place this information can be obtained.
The Launch for the Magazine will take place on Sunday at Cloud Nine and will feature different generations of calypso which includes, The Entertainer, King Starshield, King Socrates, King Meeko Singing Jackie and King Konris. Also a special tribute will be made to former calypsonian Bath Towel.
