General elections in Trinidad and Tobago set for September 7

Parliament will automatically be dissolved under the country’s constitution on Tuesday, June 16.

Persad-Bissessar said her government was the first since 1976 to serve its full term.

She noted that the constitutional reforms contained in the Constitutional Amendment Bill would be brought back in the Peoples Partnership’s second term, along with proposals for self-governance in Tobago, and the return of the death penalty, which failed to pass during this Parliament.

The opposition Peoples National Movement (PNM) has already chosen all but one of its candidates to contest the 39 constituencies in Trinidad and two in Tobago.

The parties comprising the ruling People’s Partnership coalition are in the process of handing out nomination forms to members interested in being screened as candidates.
