Govt using Parliament to campaign—Rowley

He said that was being done despite the fact a date for the election had not been announced as yet by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

Rowley spoke with reporters briefly after Monday’s screening exercise for PNM candidates for the constituencies of Diego Martin Central, Barataria/San Juan and Chaguanas East.

It started at 5 pm and concluded five hours later at Balisier House, Port-of-Spain.

He said he was pleased with the screening process, adding only one constituency remains to be completed—Chaguanas East.

It was given additional time to find suitable nominees. Opposition Senator Diane Baldeo-Chadeesingh was approved several weeks ago but subsequently withdrew her candidacy. A new prospective candidate was being sought.

Questioned outside Balisier House, Rowley said Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar had become “desperate.” He was responding to more than one attempt being made by the Prime Minister to have him sanctioned in Parliament.

Persad-Bissessar made a statement last week seeking to have him referred to the Privileges Committee for statements he made in a motion of no confidence against Finance and the Economy Minister Larry Howai.

She also told a UNC rally in Couva at the weekend she was seeking to have Rowley suspended from Parliament on the Emailgate matter.

“She is looking for a plan B or a plan C… the whole alphabet, so I wish her well,” Rowley said.

He said he stood “behind my duty which is to ask for an investigation if one is warranted and if anything warranted an investigation it was that.”

He said while the Parliament was being used to conduct the UNC’s campaign, the PNM would respond outside of the chamber.

Rowley also said he did not know what the PM meant when she repeated she would call the 2015 general election when it was constitutionally due.

“I don’t know that you could call an election when it is not constitutionally due. A PM can call an election the day after you are elected. That is a nonsense statement some handler told her to say but it doesn’t make any sense,” Rowley said.
