GRENADA-POLITICS-Prime Minister says money from came from BVI, not Saudi Arabia

The prime minister, whose administration has been rocked in the last month by internal wrangling and rumours of wrangling followed by a bruising parliamentary battle against an opposition no-confidence vote, said in a statement issued late on Wednesday that the donor did not wish to be identified for a contribution to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) five months ago.

“At every stage, it was the understanding and belief of Prime Minister Thomas, that these funds were intended to assist the NDC and for no other purpose,” his office said, claiming that the contribution came through a bank transfer on January 4, 2012, from a “friend of Grenada” based in the BVI who asked nothing in return.

“The Prime Minister and Political Leader of the NDC affirms that no reward, benefit or consideration was demanded, requested or proposed, and that none has been given or promised in return,” the statement said.

The revelation came in the face of pressure from the main opposition New National Party (NNP) for him to reveal details of the transaction.
