The illegal firearms were discovered in a barrel that was recently cleared at the Port Authority in Basseterre, hidden among soap detergent.
It was on Monday 6th January, 2014, between the hours of 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm, when the Drug Squad collaborated with the Customs and Excise Department Enforcement Division, and based on intelligence and surveillance, the tip led to an operation that resulted in the seizure of the firearms and ammunitions.
Police sources say the operation started in Basseterre and ended in Sandy Point, with the execution of a Stop and Search Operation, during which the barrel was discovered with the illegal items.
In the exercise the packages were examined and opened and had the contents removed revealing three (3) fire arms and thirteen (13) rounds of ammunition in boxes of soap powder. The fire arms were two (2) semi-automatic pistols and one (1) revolver.
Law enforcements authorities explained that their officers found two packages that did not appeared to be properly sealed and their alertness soon confirmed that something was not right. One person is currently in police custody assisting with this investigation, while others are being sought.
The firearms and ammunition have been placed in the custody of the police. Authorities however did not reveal the name of the country from which the barrel was imported.
