Dr. Harris said that over 33% of the people living in the Federation are suffering and unable to make ends meet. He also said they are incapable of buying goods that they need to sustain their health.
However, Harris, who has been tipped by the opposition coalition, Team Unity, to be their choice for Prime Minister after the next elections, noted that they have an important and urgent responsibility to make life better for all who live in St. Kitts and Nevis, and also to ensure that health services are affordable to all in the Federation.
“So that people in the JNF Hospital who are patients wouldn’t have to be there waiting in pain (and) can’t get medication because the government is unable to provide any, despite the talk that the country is doing well.”
So our agenda is a prosperity agenda with “prosperity” for all, Dr. Harris noted.
Under this plan, the PLP leader disclosed that all persons would be given the opportunity to own lands, to own their own homes and a level playing field will be created for doing business.
The often out-spoken, former government minister said that he and his team have the “competence, experience and know-how” to turn the country around.
When it comes to experience in government, Harris pointed out that the Team Unity Construct has a wealth of knowledge with several of its coalition members with experience in the public sector.
From that backdrop he reminded that when he held the portfolio as Minister of Finance, he the country produced a surplus in its fiscal performance.
“As Minister of Finance, for the first time in the history of the Administration, from 1995 under my watch, the country was able to obtain a surplus again in 2008 and 2009. And certainly at that time we didn’t have to manipulate the flows of the Citizenship by Investment programme because at that time there really was nothing.”
Harris said he not only balanced the budget but was also able to turn around the nation’s debt.
Harris was at the time speaking on local radio.
