Head of Local Catholic Church Sets the Record Straight

“The Catholic Church expressed its views on the use of contraceptives in an encyclical ‘Humane Vitae” (on human life) basically forbidding the use of any contraceptives including condoms,” Latus told MiyVue.com

According to Father Latus, “The IUD’s and other devices play basically the abortive function in very early stages of pregnancy, while pills cause cancer to woman health and life. The recent statement made by Pope Benedict that “Condom could be used in some cases” to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS did not mean that the church allows now for use of Condoms across the way.”

Latus went on to say that the Church still upholds that sex has only place in faithful, married relationship between husband and wife.

“The church never allows promiscuity. There may be cases when one of the spouses in marriage has contracted HIV/AIDS and in that case the use of condom could be justified,” he added.

It was further revealed by Father Latus that Catholic Church advocates the abstinence before marriage and faithful relationship in marriage rather than just use of condoms in the fight against the spread of AIDS.

“Actually, the free distribution of Condoms may be contra productive in the fights against AIDS as such unwillingly promotes promiscuous sex,” said Latus in conclusion.

Meanwhile, minority Leader and Albay Representative Edcel Lagman sees hope Pope Benedict XVI’s controversial position on condom use to prevent HIV/AIDS would eventually lead to allowing contraceptives use to avert high risk pregnancies.

“If condom use is the lesser evil than the spread of HIV/AIDS as clarified by Papal sources, then contraceptives are an infinitely lesser evil than maternal death and abortion,” he said in a statement.

Bioethics theologians have clarified that the Pope’s permission for Catholics to use condoms for health reasons covers heterosexual relations, not only to male prostitutes.

Lagman said this was a “welcome development as it signals the liberalization of the stand of the Catholic Church when it comes to condom use to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.”
