Students from all the high schools on St. Kitts will compete in a fun and friendly environment while learning the many challenging concepts in mathematics, on Thursday 4th May at the Old Girl School Building, Basseterre from 9:00am to 6:00pm.
The event is being organized by the UNESCO St. Kitts Math Olympiad Committee and it will be dubbed “The Great Math Challenge”.
The committee has put together some very interesting activities for the students and the public to engage in. These include use of manipulative, games, computer generated activities and information related to our ancestors’ contribution to mathematics.
Individuals, like Euclid of Alexandria, a great Egyptian mathematician, gave what is known today as “Geometry”. In his book, The Elements, all of the rules of geometry are basically the same as the rules today. Another highlight of the day would be the Trivia Drop Box. Persons attending the event will get the chance to complete these trivia and help their school of choice win addition prizes.
The day’s competition will be of two types: a school-team competition in the morning and an individual competition in the afternoon. Ten students from each school will participate in the fun day and these students will hail from forms 3 and 4.
The top three winning school and top three winning students will receive attractive prizes.
According to an official the Committee extends a hearty appreciation to all the schools for participating in the event and wishes all schools the best in this competition.
