Hon Liburd opens official campaign office

Talking to scores of party supporters who had thronged at the open-air compound outside the building housing the office, Hon Liburd said that they had always looked for a place where they could accommodate all they wanted to do for the campaign, and thanked Dr Norman Crammer for working with them to ensure that they were able to have the place for the purpose of the elections.

“This is really the official campaign office and we intend to, from Monday have it officially opened for business so that people can come here to check, to see if their name is on the voters’ list,” said Hon Liburd, who is also the Federal Minister for Health and Environment, Community Affairs, Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs.

She explained that the office will be manned by persons who will be giving out information as to where people in Central Basseterre would vote, and providing answers for any other questions in terms of voting. Persons will be given all paraphernalia in terms of shirts, caps, stickers and rulers.

“We are going to have a business area and it is a very large area,” said Minister Liburd. “We are also going to have a little relaxing area, where you have television and you can come in and just relax and sort of communicate with other people who are here relaxing; have a sort of social gathering.

“We are also trying to do a sort of a kiddie’s corner so if you come with children, the children can have a place where they can just play while you relax. And in the yard, as we have a big yard space, we intend to use it for entertainment and also for bringing people together for different reasons and we intend to have meetings with various target groups.”

According to the Hon Liburd, there will be a permanent bar in the yard where food and drinks will be available on a regular basis.

“So all in all I think that it will serve all the purposes that we would want for the campaign and of course you see how beautiful it looks,” she observed. “I really want to thank all of those persons who worked so hard to make it look as beautiful as it looks. I think it was really pleasing to everybody today.”

At the same function, the Hon Marcella Liburd recognised two young individuals from the Central Basseterre area, Mr Janos Bagnall, and Mr Keeshan Millard better known as Banker with his Sweet Sizzling Summer troupes, for their immense contribution to the various art forms in the country.

“First one was the man Bagnall who is very popular with his song ‘The Boss’,” said Hon Liburd. “He won the TDC Groovy Soca Monarch Competition with 270 points recently held and he came second runner-up in the ZIZ Power Soca Monarch Competition with 242 points.

“He did extremely well and so we thought that someone coming from the Market Street area, that as a community we should really give him some recognition for what he has done for himself, for his band, for his community and for his country. He plays with Kollision Band which basically comes out of the McKnight area”

Banker’s Sweet Sizzling Summer was adjudged the overall winning troupe with 601 points. Both King and Queen of the Bands awards also went to Banker’s troupe. The group was also named the Most Colourful Troupe and the Most Creative Troupe with 89 and 119 points respectively.

“We did the same thing for Banker,” said Hon Liburd. “Everybody knows Banker in terms of the most successful mas camps, most colourful and meaningful troupes year after year. He was the winner last Carnival again in terms of the troupes for parade day and we felt that Banker is someone with so much creativity and imagination that we should recognise him and his team for what he does, and so we did that today.”
